I have endless patience and don't hold grudges. In my experience praise and motivation work best to build a mutually respectful and fruitful working relationship. As a 20y+ teacher and graduate with three degrees, I value the importance of education and the massive difference it can make to people's lives. I customise my teaching according to students' strengths, needs and gaps in knowledge by using what I've learned as a classroom teacher; I combine this with the insights I've gleaned from my tutoring. I accelerate students' learning by thoughtful crafting and delivery of lessons that challenge them through carefullly-engineered questioning and that motivates them to learn and keep seeking knowledge.
Students and I do a number of interactive educative games to grow their skill sets because learning can be more firmly embedded when having fun! I regularly pop in mini fluency drives to practise and retain knowledge. Lessons range from 15-minute boosters to 2-hour study sessions covering the below:
CEM / GL programme differences, similarities and expectations
Creating a revision timetable that promotes smart working, not prolonged working
Exam technique - staying calm when facing unfamiliar types of questions
Time management - proportion of 'brain time' students allocate according to ability to answer certain questions
Mental arithmetic and variants of problem-solving strategy
Numerical, verbal and non-verbal reasoning
Broadening vocabulary in order to understand the task being set
I use students' interests and abilities to build up an arsenal of strengths, and together we build up their resilience - like wearing a coat of armour - to deal with the exciting things that lie ahead in life! Everyone has their own talents - let's discover what they are!
