About Maggie

I am Junior at the State University of New York at Fredonia, working towards earning my degree in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in Social Sciences. In my time at college, I have had the opportunity to tutor both fellow peers and students in elementary school during my field placements.

As an aspiring teacher, I am not only teaching you, but you are teaching me. In working with students, I am being given the opportunity to learn and grow myself while striving towards student success.

My lessons are fun, organized, and simple, and typically presented via slideshow. In my lessons, given my background in Early Childhood Education, I love using hands-on activities, songs, videos, and games. Nevertheless, as a college student myself, I know that these methods are not always suitable for older learners, and I have the capacity to take that energy and put it into more matured lesson plans depending on the age of my students.

Being the oldest sibling in my family, helping elementary, middle, and high schoolers with homework, projects, and studying is not a foreign concept to me. In addition to education, I also have a passion for theater and the fine arts, which I have partaken in since I was 12 and continue to do so in college during my free time. At home, I live on and help out on my family's farm.

My favorite part about working with students is seeing them succeed. It sounds cliche, but it's true. I love when I am able to help students achieve their goals and to see their self-pride and happiness when they do.

I have always wanted to be a teacher. As a child. everyone goes through different phases of wanting to be different things when they grow up. One week, a child might want to be a veterinarian and the next, an artist. My first concrete aspiration that actually stuck was when I was twelve and realized that I wanted to be a teacher. That has been my goal ever since.

I am currently in my third year of college to become an educator. Through my degree, I have had the opportunity to work one-on-one with various students over the course of the semester and am privileged to have been able to help many students achieve their academic goals. I feel that I am a qualified tutor as I am also a student myself and understand first-hand the struggles of being a student, as well as the mindset that it takes to succeed in an academic environment.

First, I like to get to know my student. Who are they as a person? What are their interests? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What do they hope to get out of our time working together? I like to work with them to set goals so that I can properly cater my lessons to their individual needs. I don't want learning to feel like a chore for them, I want them to be comfortable and enjoy our tutoring sessions.

I have worked with a diverse variety of students of whom I could not possibly compare to one another. I have worked with students of various different home lives, financial situations, religious and ethnic backgrounds, different learning abilities, ages, levels of knowledge, etc. I have also taken multiple Special Education courses and am working towards being certified in Special Education

If I could tell a student looking for a teacher one thing, it would be to be honest and open with what you are looking for in a tutor and what you are looking to get out of working with them. Every student is different and has different needs, and in order to find a tutor that will best suit those needs, it is important for them to properly express them right off the bat.

A recent event that I am fond of is when I had the opportunity to substitute at my old pre-school. It was my first time working in a pre-school and it was probably one of my favorite classes that I've ever taught.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should have some sort of list, whether physical or mental, of the following things:

-what subject(s) they are looking for help in

-what they feel that their strengths are (not just academically)

-what they feel that their weaknesses are

-what they think they succeed at in the subject(s) that they are looking for help in

-what they think that they need assistance on

-what things help them learn best, what has helped them learn successfully in the past

-what goals do they have, whether it be just general improvement or to pass a specific test
