About Loann
I’m a lifelong, self-directed learner, and that curiosity is a big part of how I tutor.
I believe learning shouldn't stop at the edge of the school curriculum. If a student becomes fascinated by something along the way, I’m happy to follow that curiosity when time allows. Sometimes the tangent turns out to be surprisingly useful: What does the Great Emu War have to do with history and government? What makes a superhero a hero beyond the fighting and explosions? Why do a particular song's lyrics stick with you?
I also love finding connections between schoolwork and the things students already care about. If poetry seems dry, let's start with their favorite musicians and look at the lyrics that speak to them. If they're fascinated by a movie, book, game, or character, we can use that interest as a way into reading, writing, storytelling, or critical thinking.
I have a professional background in writing, communications, presentations, and working with complex information, along with more than three years of tutoring experience. But one of my most useful qualifications may be my enormous and occasionally ridiculous database of random trivia.
I want students to leave tutoring not only more confident about their schoolwork, but more confident in their own ability to ask questions, follow their curiosity, and figure things out.

My focus is to help students think for themselves and develop confidence that they can do the work. I don't want a student to need me forever; I want them to leave a session with a better understanding of how to approach the next problem on their own.
I start by figuring out how each student works. Some students need structure and a clear “Okay, let's start.” Others need more background explanation and step-by-step support. Some understand the material perfectly well but need someone to keep them focused or review their work when they're finished.
I also get to know the student as a person. In an initial session, I ask about their interests—what they read, listen to, watch, or enjoy. Finding common ground helps break the ice and gives me a better sense of how to connect academic work to the student.
Rather than immediately giving an answer, I use questions to help students work out where they are stuck and how to move forward. We go back to the assignment instructions or the text itself, identify unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts, and figure out what the student already understands.
For writing, I encourage students to write their ideas first rather than getting stuck trying to make every sentence perfect. Once the ideas are on the page, we can identify the thesis, organize the main points, strengthen the argument or analysis, and then polish the grammar and sentence structure.
For reading comprehension, we work directly from the text. If unfamiliar vocabulary is affecting understanding, we identify it and work out its meaning in context.
For test preparation, I use sample tests and work through questions carefully before introducing time pressure. We identify vocabulary, comprehension issues, and question types, then develop strategies such as reading questions first and learning what information to look for in a passage.
For homework and organization, we break a large workload into manageable pieces, estimate how long assignments will take, and prioritize. I often start with a shorter or easier task to give the student an early sense of accomplishment, then tackle the more difficult work while I am there to help.
The goal isn't simply to finish today's assignment. It's for the student to finish thinking, “I know how to do this.”
Each lesson is adapted to the student's needs and current assignments, but a typical session may include:
1. Check-in and priorities
We review what the student needs to accomplish, including upcoming assignments, tests, and areas where they are having difficulty.
2. Identify the obstacle
Before jumping into instruction, we figure out what is actually getting in the way. Is the student confused about the material? The assignment instructions? The vocabulary? Organization? Getting started? Or do they simply need someone to keep them on track?
3. Work through the material
We tackle the most useful or urgent work for that session. Depending on the student, this might mean reading a passage together, working through homework, developing an essay, reviewing grammar, or practicing test questions.
4. Build the skill
As we work, I explain the underlying strategy and have the student practice it rather than simply giving them the answer. For example, we might identify a thesis in a draft, work out how to interpret an unfamiliar passage, or learn how to recognize what a test question is really asking.
5. Review and next steps
We look at what has been accomplished and what remains. If there is more work than we can finish during the session, I make sure the student has gotten started on each important task and understands how to continue independently.

I have known Loann for almost 20 years - both professionally and personally. She is a charming, quick-witted, ridiculously smart individual. I have learned much from her over the years. Her understanding of the English language coupled with her gentle approach and reality based explanation of why wording happens the way it does makes her a PERFECT candidate to tutor students and adults alike!
Loann graciously took me under her wing and worked tirelessly to help me understand the nuances of writing, compiling, and flawlessly executing a very complex financial electronic newsletter. I was so green, I made Kermit the frog look tan!!
Her patience is unmatched and she welcomes curious, scared questions and never makes you feel foolish about asking them.
You will be enriching the lives of anyone so fortunate to have her as a tutor!
With immense professional and personal admiration,
