About Margot

As a graduate from a STEM focused master's teaching program, I will provide pupils with learning skills and mechanisms to approach difficult content in personalized ways.

I have worked or interned in four different school districts, each very different from the other. At Norwich Free Academy (Norwich, CT) I did my student teaching where I taught a low literacy group of 10th graders Biology. I went on to run an afterschool program, implementing an archaeology curriculum that I was publishing in a middle school after-school program. I have subbed and tutored in both Killingly and Stonington, CT. Both of these schools were rural, Killingly having more of a focus on agriculture. In 2017 I interned 5 days a week for one semester at Hartford Public High School. Hartford is one of America's poorest cities, and I gained a lot of insight to what it means to live and work in an urban setting, with literally not one white student.

I am certified to teach grades 7-12 in Biology as well as General Science. I worked in an alternative education program, pioneered last year, as a math and science teacher for 8 students. Since all these students were special needs, I was given the task of preparing for over a dozen courses at once, since they were all enrolled in self-contained classes, meaning I would have to assess them, place them at a certain level and provide content for them at whatever level they were at individually. This was done using a variety of online assessment tools, and sometimes meant my 8th graders and high schoolers would have to return to elementary topics to hone their skills. This was especially important in math, where lessons are continuously building.

Before determining that education was my field, I was focused on making a career in healthcare. I became a certified Nurses Aid (CNA), certified phlebotomist, and certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) working for two different ambulance corps (Suffield Emergency Ambulance Association and Stonington Ambulance Corps). Although I did not pursue healthcare as my final career, this experience in healthcare has provided me with vast insight to science and math and their practical utilizations in real life.

I absolutely love children and enjoy finding ways to relate to their personal struggles with difficult content. In my personal opinion, anything that is worth doing requires persistence and effort. Success is defined by effort and struggle. Without hurdles along the way there is no success.

I enjoy being a part of student success, and learning alongside my students. Demonstrating a personal passion for learning is crucial for me, and I hope to foster such a passion in each of my students that I encounter.

Upon working with a new student, I typically like to gauge where they are at in their learning by using a variety of preassessment tools. My preassessments are usually short and sweet, and designed with proficiency standards in mind. A lot of times I use online tools, because these track student progress during the actual preassessment, causing questions to increase or decrease in difficulty depending on how a student is doing in that very moment. I have found these to be most efficient, allowing myself and a student to get the maximum benefit from our time together.
