About James
Here at The Uncommon Denominator, we are in the business of leading students toward their potential. Every person is different and learns in a unique style. Today's classrooms are not suited to fit every unique individual. Therefore, we pride ourselves in making the personal connections necessary to provide a successful learning experience.
My background:
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a focus in Education from the University of Texas at Austin
Grade 7-12 certified, but am comfortable tutoring students of all ages.
Master of Science in Operations Research from the Air Force Institute of Technology
One of the most gratifying experiences for me is when I see a student's face absolutely light up when a concept finally clicks for them. It's why I do this!
I have always had an interest in teaching. I am the second oldest of 6 children, so I was always helping my younger siblings with homework. Both of my parents and two sisters are teachers as well.

I like to get to know my students and what interests them. Oftentimes, if you can relate the math concepts to an area of interest, it is easier for the student to understand. Or at the very least, they won't be bored!
I have experience with grades 5, 6, 9, 11 - general math, pre-algebra, algebra, pre-calculus
Math teachers and tutors can be difficult to work with sometimes. They often do not recognize why/how certain individuals struggle with some of the concepts. I was never the best at math and have had plenty of struggles. Because of this, I believe I can empathize and communicate better with struggling students.
