About Harihara
My name is Harihara Krishnan, and I am a traditionally trained Mridangam artist from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, with over 20 years of experience in performing and teaching this sacred percussion art. Having started my musical journey at a young age, I’ve been deeply immersed in the Carnatic tradition, learning under respected gurus and accompanying vocal and instrumental artists across various platforms. As a teacher, I bring the same level of discipline, respect for tradition, and love for rhythm into every lesson. I understand that each student is unique, and I take pride in crafting a personalized approach that builds strong fundamentals while nurturing creativity and confidence. Whether you are just beginning your rhythmic journey or looking to sharpen your advanced skills, my goal is to guide you with clarity, patience, and purpose — helping you not just play the Mridangam, but truly feel its pulse.

Mridangam Lessons with Harihara Krishnan – Learn the Language of Rhythm As a dedicated Mridangam artist with over two decades of performance and teaching experience, I offer a rich and structured online learning experience tailored to each student’s level, pace, and purpose. Rooted in the Carnatic tradition yet open to improvisation and innovation, my classes aim not just to teach Mridangam — but to awaken your inner rhythm. My Teaching Method & Techniques 1. I follow a guru-shishya inspired model, adapted for online learning. I blend traditional pedagogy with modern clarity: 2. Emphasis on Nadi-Suddham (clarity of tone) and posture from the very beginning 3. Progressive lessons starting with sarvalaghu patterns and building up to complex korvais, mora, and tani avartanams 4. Frequent rhythmic vocal recitation (solkattu) to internalize laya 5. Use of voice and hand coordination exercises 6. For advanced students, we deep dive into eduppu, kanakku, and accompanying techniques across various talas and ragas 6. I also provide customized feedback videos and notation support, ensuring students can practice efficiently between sessions. A Typical Lesson Plan 1. Warm-up with sollukattu recitations and hand exercises 2. Concept explanation with real-time demonstration 3. Technique drills – fingering, tone, and pattern precision 4. Repertoire practice – varnams, kritis, or korvais (as per the level of student) 5. Discussion and Q&A – rhythm logic, tala mapping, or compositional creativity 6. Homework assignments are given every week and students can submit audio/video for review. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor 1. I don't just teach patterns — I nurture a rhythmic mindset. My students learn why a korvai works, not just how to play it. I’m also one of the few Mridangam teachers who: 2. Integrates Carnatic theory with practical laya applications 3. Gives attention to tone clarity and stamina building, often ignored in online classes 4. Teaches accompaniment techniques – not just solo playing 5. My teachings are fluent in English and Tamil making learning easy for Indian and international students alike. Who Are These Lessons For? 1. Absolute beginners with no prior musical training 2. Intermediate students who want to refine their skills or prepare for competitions/exams 3. Advanced learners seeking to master solo playing or accompanying vocal/instrumental concerts 4. Students pursuing music degrees, Carnatic certifications, or personal enrichment 5. Minimum age: 8 years and above. Both children and adults are welcome. Why Learn with Me? Because I care not just about what you play, but how you feel it. I teach with discipline, patience, fun and love for the art — keeping tradition alive while guiding each student to discover their own voice through the Mridangam. Let’s keep the rhythm going — one beat at a time.
