About Nicholas

I'm an art historian and artist with a PhD in the History of Art from the University of York, an MA (RCA) in History of Design from the Royal College of Art, and a BA in Fine Art.

I have taught art and design history for around thirty years in universities, art schools and museums: at the University of York, the University of Kent and the Kent Institute of Art and Design, and on gallery education programmes at the V&A, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery. I have consulted for Arts Council England and the Design Council, and I continue to research, write, curate and exhibit.

I work with three kinds of student:

University students, at home and abroad. I support undergraduate, MA and doctoral students in History of Art, History of Design, and art and design courses: essays, dissertations, research proposals, reading lists, critical theory and academic writing. I have extensive experience of working with international students, helping them adapt to the expectations of UK and English-language universities and to write about art with clarity and confidence.

Adults who love art. For those who want to understand art more deeply, I offer private, tailored courses in your own time: a period, a movement, a single artist, or a museum's collection. They can be online, at home or in front of the works themselves, and they're ideal before a trip to Paris, Florence or New York, or for collectors building their knowledge.

Artists and designers. I help art and design students and practitioners engage with theory and place their work in a historical and critical context.

My range covers the whole history of Western art. My specialisms are nineteenth-century and modernist art, the relationship between art and design, and critical and cultural theory, including object-oriented thought, theories of time and Romantic anti-capitalism.

University support (online, worldwide)
- Essay planning, structure and argument; feedback on drafts
- Dissertation and thesis support, from choosing a topic to the final edit
- Critical theory explained clearly and applied to your own topic
- Research proposals and applications for MA and PhD programmes
- Writing about art in academic English, for students whose first language isn't English. I'm not an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) specialist, so a good working command of written English is needed to get the most from our sessions

I can only ever guide your own work: I don't write essays or dissertations for students.

Private art history for adults
- Bespoke one-to-one or small-group courses built around your interests
- Preparation before gallery visits and travel, and private visits to galleries and museums where possible
- Guidance on reading and on looking, for new and experienced collectors

Format
- Online via Zoom or Teams, scheduled to suit your time zone
- In person at my home in St Leonards on Sea, or at your home or a suitable venue in East Sussex and Kent (travel at my discretion), and in galleries and museums in London and the South East by arrangement
- Single sessions, regular weekly sessions, or a block of hours for a dissertation or course

Whose point of view do works of art, and the institutions around them, record? How do artists negotiate "theory"? Can art ever make us good or happy?

I find these questions endlessly fascinating, and I hope you will too. Whether you're writing a dissertation in Seoul or standing in front of a Titian in Venice, you'll encounter extraordinary and beautiful things, and your confidence in your own judgement, as a viewer, a scholar or a maker of art, will grow.
