About Ilongo
Hi, I'm David. I'm a TEFL-certified English teacher and a published author, and I'm currently working on advanced studies in Education, so I'm always learning too, not just teaching. I specialize in IELTS and TOEFL prep, and I actually sat the IELTS myself and scored a Band 7, so I know the exam from the inside, not just from a textbook. Outside of teaching, I write, travel, and spend time exploring new cultures, and I also work with tech startups, which keeps me curious and up to date. I bring all of that into my lessons, real experience, genuine interest in people, and a steady focus on helping you actually reach your goals.

My approach is all about my student, meaning I build every lesson around your goals, your current level, and what's actually holding you back, whether that's confidence, vocabulary, grammar, or exam technique.
A few things I focus on:
Targeted exam practice, for IELTS and TOEFL students, we work through real practice tests and past questions, and I break down exactly why an answer scores the way it does, not just whether it's right or wrong.
Active speaking practice, instead of memorized scripts, we have real conversations. I correct gently, in the moment, so mistakes actually get fixed instead of repeated.
Vocabulary in context, rather than word lists to memorize, we build vocabulary through the topics and texts we're actually using, so it sticks.
Writing feedback that goes deeper than grammar, I look at structure, clarity, and argument, not just spelling and tense, especially for IELTS/TOEFL writing tasks.
Listening and pronunciation work, targeted drills based on the specific sounds or patterns that trip you up, not generic exercises.
Progress tracking, we check in regularly on where you started vs. where you are, so you can see real movement toward your target score.
A typical lesson usually flows like this: quick warm-up, focused skill work, a main practice activity, then a short review of what we covered and what to work on next. At the end of the day, I care about what actually gets you to your goal, and we'll figure that out something together.
