About Colin

Hello! I'm Colin, a British computer science teacher with a genuine love for helping young people understand how technology works.

My path to teaching is a little unusual, and I think it makes me a better tutor. I spent 15 years working in IT in the UK, first as an Application Deployment Analyst at Warwickshire College and University Centre, then as a freelance IT consultant, before retraining as a teacher in 2018. That means when I teach you about networks, databases, or how software really works, I am drawing on real experience, not just a textbook.

Since 2018 I have taught in schools across China, including middle schools, a foreign language school, a university, and most recently as a STEAM teacher at Hailiang Experimental School, where I designed hands-on, project-based lessons.

Along the way I earned a Master's in Education (Advanced Teaching with STEM) to complement my BSc in Computing from Lancaster University, and I am currently working towards a Doctorate in Education.

My students tell me I am patient, encouraging, and good at explaining complicated ideas in simple terms. I know exam preparation can feel stressful, so I focus on building confidence as well as knowledge. When I'm not teaching, you'll find me tinkering with technology at home, and I bring that same curiosity and enthusiasm into every lesson.

I believe anyone can learn computer science when it is taught clearly, patiently, and with plenty of hands-on practice. My lessons are built around doing, not just listening: you will write real Python code from the very first session, and we will build your understanding step by step until exam questions feel straightforward.

I specialise in Cambridge IGCSE (0478) and A-Level (9618) Computer Science, and I also support OCR, AQA, and Edexcel specifications. Every lesson is tailored to the student. For IGCSE learners, we focus on the core syllabus: algorithms, programming, data representation, networks, and databases.

For A-Level students, we go deeper into data structures, object-oriented programming, and the theory needed for top grades.
A typical lesson includes a quick review of previous work, a taught concept with live coding demonstrations, guided practice problems, and past paper questions so you learn the exam technique as well as the content. I provide worksheets and practice tasks after each lesson, and I give parents regular progress updates.

I am a British teacher with 8 years of classroom experience and a previous 15-year career in IT, so I bring real industry perspective to everything I teach. I hold a BSc in Computing from Lancaster University and a Master's in Education.

Lessons take place online via Zoom or Google Meet. Whether you are aiming to turn a grade 5 into a 7, or a B into an A*, I will build a plan around your goals. The first lesson is free, so we can meet, assess where you are, and decide together how to get you where you want to be.
