About Mcricel

Hi guys, I'm Mcricel but if that's too hard a name you can call me by my middle name Matthew. I love watching movies, reading books, playing basketball and badminton and missing the bus I take to get home from school so feel free to talk about any of these things with me! Just think of me as a friend who actually enjoys helping do your homework with you, because I should probably (hopefully) be less scary than your teachers.

I personally believe in concept mastery over rote memorization. I teach in a way that students are able to explain, in their own language, how a certain material works so that they are able to apply it at more advanced curriculum. We'll discuss the concept at first, go through different practice problems patiently and we'll go through them together.

I take my lesson plans from a proven-to-work, private after-school program I was a part of for over a year. This program specifically trained students from SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta, a STEM-heavy private school renowned for consistently placing top 10 nationally in standardized testing and producing international olympiad medalists. That means every structure I use has been battle-tested with some of Indonesia's top students.

A Typical Lesson Plan:

1. Review & Diagnostic (10-15 min): I will first review the material the student is currently going through (which I will ask beforehand to prepare practice questions) and test their conceptual knowledge of the subject before explaining it from the ground up.
2. Guided Practice (15-20 min): We will then go through practice problems together to test their grasp of the material and work through any confusion in real-time.
3. Independent Practice (15-20 min): After that, I provide time for them to work on problems independently that we will go over together only after they've finished to the best of their ability to build confidence and self-reliance.
4. Recap & Homework (5-10 min): Lesson recap and targeted practice if deemed necessary to reinforce what we covered.

WHAT SETS ME APART:

I'm a Bronze Medalist in the World Mathematical Invitational (Indonesia Preliminary) and a qualifier for the VANDA Science Olympiad Global Finals. I'm currently taking Math 259 (Trig/Pre-Calculus) at Valley College as a high school incoming junior. But beyond Math, I also bring multiple international and national-level debate accomplishments to the table. Debate trained me to explain things in a way that people truly understand. If a student doesn't get my first explanation, I'll figure out another way for them to.

But more importantly, I would say my strongest weapon is my approach in explaining, which I would say is the right amount of laid back and strict so that students can follow along without stressing out. I found this out throughout my years of helping my friends with their homework and getting the same comment over and over again. I intend to teach students in a way that they do not feel shamed and instead find more motivation to do their work and study. I want our lessons to be more conversational as opposed to a strict teacher-student hierarchy. It also helps that I am around their age which means not only do I understand where and why most students get confused at certain times, it also makes for a more relatable environment!

Lessons are honestly for every Math and English level up until high school. Whether a student needs catching up or is trying to get ahead, we'll figure out the right pace together. We can talk about specifics in more detail, though I'm certain I'd be able to accommodate what you need with enough preparation.
