About Natalie

I teach Visual Arts because I believe it develops critical thinking, self-awareness, and creative confidence—skills that extend far beyond the art classroom. I genuinely enjoy supporting students as they discover their own visual language and realize that their ideas are worth exploring and sharing. My goal as a tutor is not just to help students “get better marks,” but to help them grow as thinkers, creators, and confident learners.

English

I am an experienced international educator with over 27 years of teaching Visual Arts across a range of curricula, including IB (MYP, DP, and CP), IEB, and other international and national programmes. I work with students not only to strengthen their technical skills, but to help them think, analyse, and communicate ideas visually with confidence and purpose.

What makes me unique as a Visual Arts tutor is my concept-driven, inquiry-based approach, combined with a strong emphasis on individual student voice. I believe Visual Arts is both a creative and intellectual discipline. My role is to guide students through the full artistic process—developing ideas, refining techniques, and articulating meaning—whether they are working towards formal assessments, building a portfolio, or growing creatively.

My methodology
My lessons are carefully structured while remaining flexible, adapting to each student’s level, learning style, and goals. I focus on:
• Concept development, helping students move from initial ideas to resolved outcomes
• Process-based learning, not just final products
• Reflection and visual analysis, so students can explain and justify their work clearly
• Confidence-building support, especially for students who doubt their artistic ability
I place strong emphasis on art history, contextual understanding, and visual analysis, helping students make meaningful connections between artists, cultures, historical contexts, and their own work. This is particularly valuable for assessment-based courses and portfolio development.

Languages
I teach fluently in English, which is my primary language of instruction. I have extensive experience working with multilingual and EAL students, and I adapt my explanations, vocabulary, and pace to ensure clarity and understanding.

What a typical lesson looks like
A typical lesson may include:
• Reviewing current coursework, projects, or portfolios
• Developing or refining concepts and visual ideas
• Technical guidance (drawing, painting, mixed media, composition, visual research)
• Art history or artist references to strengthen context and understanding
• Clear, constructive feedback with specific next steps
Lessons are always goal-oriented, and students leave knowing exactly what to work on, how to improve, and why those steps matter.

Who my lessons are for
My Visual Arts lessons are well suited to:
• Middle school and high school students
• Students following IB MYP, DP, CP, IEB, and other international curricula
• Students preparing coursework, assessments, or portfolios
• Creative students who want structure, guidance, and challenge
• Students who lack confidence and need encouragement and clarity
I also work particularly well with highly capable students who need support organising ideas, meeting assessment criteria, or articulating their thinking clearly.
