About Jesse
I have BA with a concentration in music from Bennington College, and I am currently earning my master's degree in Music Education at CUNY Lehman College in the Bronx. I have had over 15 years of experience as a professional musician and music educator, and I have travelled to 70+ countries doing what I love for a living!
I often hear complaints from my students about teachers they've had in the past. A common theme is that many music instructors don't really understand how their students learn, and the process ceases to be enjoyable. They then find themselves bored or uninspired with their lessons and they eventually stop taking them.
I'm a different kind of music teacher in that I'm constantly seeking for my students' own input into their learning process. In my view, there are million ways to learn how to do one specific thing, and there is also a specific way to learn how to do a million different things. Therefore, there is really something for everyone in music, and I truly believe that anyone can do it if they really wish to.
If you're interested in learning about Mozart, The Beatles, Miles Davis or Swedish death metal, for example, I'm always ready to use my expertise to switch gears and create an opportunity for us to learn about music together. Alternately, if you're just looking to get a handle on the basics, I can teach you what you need to know to achieve a level of fluency where you will have many paths to success.

I like to orient all of my lessons around my students' specific interests. A typical beginner drum, piano or percussion lesson with me might look like the following:
-25 minutes of technical study at the drum kit (i.e. rudiments, drum beats, patterns, scales, patterns, specific pieces)
-25 minutes of music reading study
-10 minutes music listening, music appreciation and history
As you make progress at your instrument, the more you'll begin to feel more confident in broadening the scope of your lessons and incorporating your own interests.
Alternately, if you have a specific learning style, I will try to always be sensitive to your needs as a learner so that you will optimally progress at your musical goals.
