About David

Growing up in Northern California, I spent much of my childhood outside in nature. As I fell in love with music, I’ve tried to take the inspiration I find in the natural world and put it into my playing and teaching. I first started trumpet in third grade, and quickly picked up the trombone, euphonium/baritone, and French horn too—I clearly couldn’t get enough of brass instruments! Music has taken me all over the world, from China to Germany to London and across the US. After graduating from The Juilliard School with my bachelor's, I moved to Houston, Texas and am currently studying at Rice University with renowned trumpet pedagogue Barbara Butler.

I believe that playing a musical instrument is not only rewarding in itself, but can also lead us to learn how to live life more fully. The acts of discipline, attentive listening skills, risk taking, and individuality are things that I strive to bring out in my students. I am happy to work with people from any skill level or background, and pull from a wide range of methods and concepts in my teaching.
Currently I am working with beginner to advanced trumpet players and beginner trombone/euphonium/french horn players.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I distinctly remember my first time playing in Youth Orchestra and being amazed at what an incredible experience it is to be able to make music with a group people. I think like many trumpet players, I developed an appreciation for the role of our instrument through John Williams tracks such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I never get tired of Bach. His music is on another level. That being said, there is so much to explore and learn from every single work of art, and I love listening to all genres and artists.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I hold my students to the highest standards that we can create together. Learning mastery in any skill is a valuable experience, whether or not someone ends up playing professionally.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument has its challenges. For us as brass players, sound production is key. For pianists, it’s not an issue at all. For string players, intonation is extremely important. Mastering any instrument is a lifelong endeavor and I have a lot of respect for those who do it, no matter which instrument specifically.
  • What are your keys to success?

In general, I think perseverance and willingness to grow and change are key. In addition, having a sense of what success means to you- whether that comes from creating great art, collaborating with others, or learning to master an instrument,
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

My first choice would probably be Gottfried Reiche, who was Bach’s trumpet player. After that, Wynton Marsalis, who is a genius and able to speak in so many different ways through his horn. Third, the Beatles!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I always had a few plants in my apartment when in school. It was rewarding to see them slowly grow and change with the right amount of light, water, and fertilizer. It was often comforting to remember that no matter how that seating audition or orchestra rehearsal went, I would go back home to those same plants, unchanged. It was a humbling reminder that growth and change takes time, and to be patient.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

As a teacher, I tailor my lessons to my students’ goals and skills. I make lesson plans and an effort to think about strategies and assignments outside of lessons as well as being as engaging as possible during instruction. Finding a balance of intensity and fun is always worth striving for!
