About Ian
Hi! I'm Ian, an Anthropology PhD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. I've spent my academic and professional career studying people and the past... from excavating archaeological sites and analyzing human and animal remains to teaching students how to ask thoughtful questions about human societies, history, culture, and scientific inquiry.
Although anthropology is my specialty, I'm a lifelong learner with broad interests across history and the social sciences, and I genuinely enjoy working with students outside my own discipline. I have experience with judging the Texas Academic Decathlon contested by students ranging from 12-18 years old and truly enjoy engaging in student learning at all levels. Whether you're a middle or high school student who needs some extra support, a college student navigating a difficult course or research paper, or an adult learner pursuing something simply because you're curious, you're welcome here.
Most importantly, I remember what it feels like to be a student. You don't need to impress me, already know the “right” questions, or apologize for something you don't understand. Bring what you know, what you don't know, and what you're trying to accomplish—and we'll start from there.

My approach to tutoring begins with mentorship. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and saying, “I have absolutely no idea what this means!” Learning works best when there is room to be curious without feeling judged, so one of my first goals is simply getting to know you: what you are working on, what already makes sense, where you are getting stuck, and how you learn best.
Rather than simply giving answers, I like to work through problems together and help students develop the reasoning skills to reach those answers themselves. A typical session starts with what you need most that day. We might unpack a difficult reading, work through concepts from class, prepare for an exam, brainstorm a paper, organize an argument, or revise something you have already written. From there, I use questions, examples, discussion, and step-by-step explanation to make difficult material more approachable. There is no single lesson plan that works for everyone, so our sessions will adapt to your goals and learning style.
What sets me apart is the combination of teaching, research, and real-world professional experience I bring to tutoring. I am a PhD candidate, university instructor, and professional archaeologist, but I try to approach students first and foremost as a mentor. I have twice been nominated for a university teaching award, and some of the most rewarding moments of my teaching career have been watching students who initially doubted themselves discover that they are much more capable than they thought.
I welcome learners from middle school through college and beyond. My strongest areas include anthropology, archaeology, sociology, history and social studies, academic writing, research methods and research design. Whether you are struggling with a class, trying to turn a jumble of ideas into a strong paper, preparing for an exam, or simply want someone patient to help you make sense of unfamiliar material, we can figure it out together.
