I'm an architectural engineering student at Heriot-Watt university - I love maths and have helped younger students with their studies throughout my high school years. I teach using problem-based learning and try to tailor each lesson to individuals' needs.
I assess and tailor each lesson based on what my student needs. Firstly, I assess what they need help with and design a teaching plan. I teach topics that they require help with and pick up topics that I feel they need to work on. I teach according to their syllabus with regular assessments. I set homework every week and go over any questions they need help on.
My teaching method revolves around confidence boosting through quizzes, questioning and student participation. People learn best through interaction, rather than the teacher constantly droning. Through this I will aim to deliver concrete teaching methods that allows the student to question and formulate their own answers.
I am at university studying Biology but I have taken maths all the way through school and into university modules as well. My methodology for teaching routes from the experience I gained while working as Learning Mentor for City Year. As I guide students through their topics of struggle, I'll attempt to understand how and why certain areas get them caught up, as to gain their perspective of the subject. Through this method we're able to progress through the topic together, whilst at a pace they can comfortably work at.
I customise my teaching based upon my student's needs. While some students like me to go through theory more extensively before jumping into questions, others like to practice exam questions together. I create worksheets and solve the problems my students need help with before each session, and try to hone in as much as I can on their areas of difficulty.
