Every dance routine builds on the same handful of structural ideas.

• The body: covers the physical movements and isolations that bring a routine to life.
• Steps: describes what the dancer actually does, from gestures to full sequences.
• Use of space: covers formations, levels, and the patterns traced across the dance area.
• Timing: relates to speed, beat, and how movement aligns with the music.
• Quality of movement: defines how a movement feels, whether explosive, sustained, or controlled.

Once these basics are mastered, building original routines becomes much easier.

The hourly rate for choreography classes in Portsmouth averages £19/h.

The cost depends on a few key criteria:

• Skill level: your starting point and the goals you want to achieve.
• Choreographer's credentials: qualifications, performance history, and reputation all influence the price.
• Number of hours: longer sessions or weekly lessons tend to come with better rates.
• Teaching mode: whether the tutor travels to you or you visit them affects the cost.

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their style before committing.

The key to learning choreography lies in deliberate, focused practice.

• Study the moves: focus on the details of each step, the timing, and the quality of movement.
• Chunk the routine: practise one block, then the next, then link them together.
• Practise at half speed: slow practice prevents bad habits and builds clean technique.
• Record yourself: a mirror or recording shows what needs adjusting in posture and timing.
• Feel the rhythm: once the steps feel natural, layer in emotion and musical phrasing.

A private choreography tutor speeds up this process enormously by giving instant feedback.
