Classics combines language study, literary analysis and historical investigation into the ancient world.

• Classical languages: building the toolkit to translate Cicero, Virgil, Homer and Sophocles.
• Classical literature: epic poetry, tragedy, comedy, oratory and historical writing in original or translation.
• Ancient history: key events, figures and political systems of Greece and Rome from the archaic period to late antiquity.
• Mythology and thought: gods, heroes, philosophical schools and the visual culture that brought them to life.

One-to-one tuition lets you study at your own pace and explore the parts of Classics that fascinate you most.

In York, expect to pay about £27/h for an hour of Classics tuition.

The cost depends on a few key things:

• Your level of study (GCSE, A-Level, undergraduate or general interest).
• The tutor's experience and academic background in Classics, Latin or Ancient Greek.
• The number of hours booked across the term.
• The lesson format (online, at the student's home, or at the tutor's location).

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining just as effective for translation and essay work.

A grade 9 in GCSE Classical Civilisation is built on consistent study, deep familiarity with set texts and confident essay writing.

• Study the texts in depth: understand the plot, characters and themes well enough to discuss them without notes.
• Practise past papers regularly under timed conditions to build speed and stamina.
• Refine your essay technique: clear arguments, supporting evidence from the texts, and well-structured paragraphs.
• Embed evidence from the set material in every paragraph to lift your answers into the top band.

One-to-one tuition with a Classics expert turns careful preparation into the confidence you need on exam day.
