The seven qira'at are authentic readings of the same text, passed down through unbroken chains of transmission.

• The seven readers are Nafi', Ibn Kathir, Abu 'Amr, Ibn 'Amir, 'Asim, Hamzah and al-Kisa'i.
• The riwayat are the narrations of each reading, like Warsh and Qalun from Nafi'.
• Hafs 'an 'Asim is the most widely recited narration today and the one most UK learners begin with.
• The differences involve vowelling, elongation (madd) and some word forms, without contradicting the meaning.

Learning with a teacher is the traditional way to master a qira'ah, since recitation is passed on from mouth to ear.
