Find music theory lessons near me in Hoddesdon

Music theory rests on foundational ideas that make everything else click into place.

• Reading music: Learning to read notes on a stave, understand time signatures, and recognise rhythmic values is the first step.
• Pitch and scales: Scales define the notes available in a key and are the basis for melodies and harmonies.
• Chords and harmony: Harmony explores how chords relate to each other within a key, shaping the mood of a piece.
• Intervals: An interval is the distance between two notes — recognising them by ear and on paper is a core skill.

With these fundamentals in place, more advanced topics like counterpoint, modulation, and composition become much more approachable.

In music theory, the 1 3 5 rule describes how to build a triad from any major or minor scale.

• The first note (1): The root is the starting note of the chord and gives it its name — for example, C in a C major chord.
• The third (3): The third note determines whether the chord is major (bright) or minor (dark), making it the most expressive note of the triad.
• The fifth (5): It anchors the sound and gives the chord its sense of resolution and completeness.

Once you grasp this principle, building chords by ear and on paper becomes second nature.

With 5/5, music theory teachers in Hoddesdon show excellent results.
