Understanding music theory starts with its essential building blocks.

• Reading music: Learning to read notes on a stave, understand time signatures, and recognise rhythmic values is the first step.
• Notes and scales: Understanding major and minor scales gives you the vocabulary to analyse any piece of music.
• Chords: Chords are built from scales and show how notes combine to create tension and resolution.
• Musical intervals: Intervals underpin chord construction, melody writing, and aural training.

A private music theory tutor can guide you through these concepts in the right order and at your own pace.

The hourly rate for music theory lessons in York averages £26/h.

Several factors influence the price:

• The grade you're working towards (from Grade 1 through to Grade 8)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The package you choose (one-off sessions or regular weekly lessons)
• The teaching mode (in-person or video call)

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

In music theory, the 1 3 5 rule describes how to build a triad from any major or minor scale.

• The first note (1): The root is the starting note of the chord and gives it its name — for example, C in a C major chord.
• The middle note (3): A major third produces a happy sound; a minor third gives a sadder, more introspective quality.
• The top note (5): The fifth adds stability and fullness to the chord without changing its major or minor quality.

A music theory tutor can show you how to apply this rule across scales, keys, and musical styles.

Music theory instructors in York stand out with 5/5.
