About George
I am a Mathematics graduate with a Master's in my subject, who focused primarily on Pure Mathematics throughout my degree. I completed my degree as a 4 year course here at the University of Manchester. During my degree, I tutored a struggling student through to success at A-level, and following my degree I went on to complete half of a teaching qualification. I have deferred to complete the qualification next year but I have significant experience teaching individuals and whole classes of GCSE students.
In addition to this, I am a native English speaker so communication should not be an issue. I am the eldest of five children in my family so I am comfortable with students of all ages although I prefer to teach more advanced mathematics. I am a passionate and informed mathematician and a life-long learner, I am comfortable with all of the content on the GCSE and A/AS-level syllabuses and can easily prepare lessons for anything more advanced (STEP, uni topics) given advance notice.
Finally, I have a valid DBS certificate from September 2019.

I am a passionate mathematician taking a break from my pursuit of teaching in a school for a year. I have been a strong mathematician my entire life and have recently achieved my Master's degree in the subject. Throughout my own experience in school, both as a student and a teacher, I have noticed many issues associated with our current methods of teaching mathematics.
Most struggling students in the classroom are simply confused, scarred and under-serviced. Many students struggle to understand mathematics at a basic level because they never make the correct links between abstract concepts in the subject. In the confines of a classroom, where many students must be taught at once, individual understanding often falls to the wayside.
My teaching philosophy is simple - in our first session, we will establish your goals and your current level of progress. Throughout subsequent sessions, we will develop understanding first by addressing any false beliefs or gaps of knowledge preventing you from proceeding with confidence. Once we have established this baseline, we will cover the remaining content you need in a systematic way planned by myself, with a focus on key concepts and their workings so that we learn how to solve problems while we learn new material, rather than learning how to solve a style of problem before becoming comfortable with the ideas.
As a sense of comfort is developed with the mathematical content, I will also begin to teach you the basic problem-solving insights and methods relevant to find success in advanced mathematics. I was invited to the BMO before I was aware of its existence as a sixth-former, so these are skills that I've been honing for years and I can vouch first-hand for the usefulness of developing your problem-solving ability early in life.
I am comfortable teaching a wide range of students but my lessons would be best suited for high-achieving pre-university students looking to achieve A* grades or success with university entry papers (I sat the STEP papers myself and achieved entry to Warwick University before coming to Manchester) or students struggling to make the transition to university mathematics. I feel that students in these brackets would have the most to gain from my tuition.
