Since there are many different exam boards for maths, the curriculum varies, but what is often the case is students struggle with specific concepts, which in turn slow them down later on down the syllabus. I have learnt throughout university that often the easiest way to learn is through simplicity, and then once you have gained confidence, the more complex results follow more easily.
My teaching methods for this particular subject vary. From personal experience, using CDs which have topic related videos work very well for step to step methods.
