About Karthika
Recently, I completed my Master’s in Comparative Literature, blending my love for foreign languages and the literary field together to better understand the world through writing. Literature and language are incredibly powerful tools, which help to shape our understanding of each other and our surroundings, however I’m aware many people have difficulties with these subjects due to past experiences. My ultimate goal, therefore, is to help these people so that they can build their confidence and skill set in these subjects, not just to achieve their target grades, but to improve their ability to express themselves and gain media literacy skills. I have four years of teaching English, and over time I have seen students go from not feeling comfortable analysing a text, to achieving grade 8s and 9s at GCSE and being able to think outside the box, and most importantly, to think for themselves. During my time at university, I also taught English as a foreign language alongside my studies, which has been equally as rewarding. Seeing my students gain confidence in self-expression and recognise their own capabilities in the English language has been a deeply enriching experience, which I wish to continue here.

A lesson will typically last one hour, focusing on an extract or reading comprehension with close reading and detailed analysis. I have over four years of experience teaching English Literature and Language, but also as a foreign language, so my lessons are targeted to all levels. The lessons can also be specifically tailored to the student’s needs, depending on whether they require help with specific texts (with GCSEs or A Level, for example) or if they’re looking to enhance other skills, such as speaking or listening. I also encourage the students to do some homework, which I will set at the end of each lesson, and am available throughout the week if any questions need answering regarding the work. Most of all, I wish to make these English lessons fun and approachable, so students can feel at ease learning with me and unafraid to ask any questions!
