About Sarah

Hi there! I’m a full-time homeschool teacher with a knack for making learning engaging, effective, and fun. Armed with a Master’s degree in Teaching and a Bachelor’s in Developmental Psychology, I specialize in helping struggling readers find their footing—and their confidence—with personalized Orton-Gillingham-based interventions. My journey into education started with my own story as a learner with ADD. I had to discover creative ways to overcome my challenges, and it’s this experience that fuels my passion for helping students tackle theirs. I know firsthand that every learner has untapped potential, and I’m here to help unlock it. When I’m not teaching, you can usually find me roller skating, diving, or rock climbing the bluff near my house—activities that remind me of the importance of perseverance and adventure in learning. Speaking of adventures, I often weave stories about my quirky cat, Juno, into my tutoring materials. (Trust me, she’s a hit with students!) My teaching style is rooted in making reading fun and accessible, especially for older kids who might feel disheartened by their struggles. Using multisensory techniques, humor, and a lot of encouragement, I help students turn “I can’t” into “I just did!” If you’re looking for a tutor who understands the struggles of learning and knows how to make the process enjoyable, I’d love to work with you. Together, we’ll make reading a skill your child feels proud of—and maybe even a favorite pastime!

Meet your (future) tutor! I am a licensed teacher with a Master’s degree in Teaching and a Bachelor’s degree in Developmental Psychology. I am deeply passionate about helping older students who face challenges with reading to unlock their potential by 'hacking' the 'reading code'. With extensive training in Orton-Gillingham-based intervention methods, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and learning differences, I am equipped to help the most struggling readers feel supported, capable, and motivated every step of the way. My Teaching Method I use the Orton-Gillingham approach, a scientifically proven multisensory, structured, and sequential method designed to address reading difficulties, including dyslexia. This approach allows students to develop a solid understanding of language structure while improving fluency and comprehension. My lessons incorporate sight, sound, touch, and movement to engage students in a way that builds both skills and confidence. When working with older students, I often incorporate memes and jokes. I find that this helps break down the stigma that many struggling readers secretly carry with them. A Typical Lesson Plan Each session is tailored to the student’s specific needs, starting with a review of previously mastered concepts to reinforce confidence and retention. We then introduce new material using multisensory techniques, such as tracing letters in sand, tapping out syllables, or building words with manipulatives. Lessons are highly interactive and include plenty of opportunities for guided practice, followed by engaging activities that make reading fun and meaningful. I also provide strategies for independent reading and writing that students can apply in their daily lives. What Sets Me Apart My background in developmental psychology gives me a unique insight into how children grow and learn, allowing me to address not just the academic challenges but also the emotional and cognitive factors that influence success. I excel at making reading fun and accessible, especially for older students who may feel frustrated or disengaged. By creating a positive and encouraging environment, I help students reframe their relationship with reading and build lasting confidence. My years of experience with Orton-Gillingham ensure I have the tools and strategies to guide students through even the most complex reading challenges. Who the Lessons Are For My lessons are designed for students in [specific grades, e.g., upper elementary, middle, and high school] who struggle with reading, spelling, or writing. Whether your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia or simply needs targeted support, I am here to provide the guidance they need. I specialize in working with older students who may feel behind in their reading skills, helping them catch up, keep up, and even excel—all while making the process enjoyable and rewarding.
