About Hannah
I’m Hannah, an Oxford English graduate with an MSc in Literature and Modernity from the University of Edinburgh. I’m currently preparing for doctoral research in literature, archives and natural history collections, alongside bookselling and archival volunteer work. I have experience in close reading, essay writing, academic research and working with young people, including as an HLTA. I’m friendly, patient and encouraging, and I love helping students develop their own ideas into clear, confident writing.

My lessons are friendly, thoughtful and tailored to the student. I focus on helping students work out what they think, then express it clearly and confidently. In English Literature and essay-based subjects, this often means close reading, discussing ideas, planning arguments, improving paragraph structure and learning how to write with precision.
Before beginning regular lessons, I like to offer an initial 20-minute consultation, ideally with the student and a parent/guardian or fee-payer where relevant. This gives us a chance to discuss what support is needed, the student’s goals, learning style, confidence levels, exam boards or application deadlines, and how I can help most effectively. I think tutoring works best when expectations are clear from the start and the student feels comfortable asking questions.
Students are welcome to send essays, extracts, mark schemes, personal statement drafts or other materials in advance. I can offer pre-reading, written comments or marking-style feedback for an additional fee, depending on the length and level of the work. This means lesson time can be used more effectively for discussion, redrafting and targeted improvement.
I support GCSE and A-Level English Literature/Language, humanities essay writing, study skills and UCAS/personal statement preparation. For personal statements, my approach is slightly different: a strong statement is not just stylish writing, but a convincing demonstration of genuine intellectual curiosity. Early sessions are often conversation-based, exploring what the student loves about the subject, what they have read, what experiences have shaped their interests, and how to connect these into a persuasive and authentic narrative.
Lessons are usually one hour, though longer sessions can be useful for UCAS work, essay planning or exam preparation. I offer online lessons, and I am also happy to travel within South East London where practical.
I aim to create an inclusive, supportive environment. I have experience working with SEN students, and I am queer-friendly and neurodiversity-aware. I love learning about students’ interests as much as I enjoy teaching, and I want lessons to feel encouraging, thoughtful and intellectually exciting.

Details
My standard rate is £35 per hour for English Literature, English Language, essay-writing support and general academic writing skills.
This includes lesson preparation, tailored exercises where useful, and focused one-to-one support during the session. Students are welcome to send materials in advance, such as essay plans, extracts, mark schemes or personal statement drafts. If substantial pre-reading, written comments or marking-style feedback is needed before the lesson, I may charge an additional fee depending on the length and level of the work.
For UCAS/personal statement support, I also charge £35 per hour to begin with. This can include discussion of subject interests, reading, experience, structure, drafting and redrafting. A strong personal statement takes time to develop, so students are welcome to book either one-off feedback sessions or a short series of sessions.
I offer an initial 20-minute consultation free of charge, ideally with the student and a parent/guardian or fee-payer where relevant, so we can discuss goals, learning style and what kind of support would be most useful.
