I have been teaching mathematics for over 17 years.
Some of my students have moved on to careers in Science, Accounting, and other fields with a strong math background. I inspire my students to become confident in math by ensuring their foundational knowledge is sound, then building on the foundation to develop more advanced skills.

For every math lesson with middle schoolers (grades 6-8), I endeavor to assist students in answering three questions- the why, the what, and the how of learning. Students are better engaged and motivated to learn when they see value in their education (the why). It must be meaningful, so I always establish at the beginning when it would be beneficial for them to learn what is being presented.
To ensure that students grasp the content at hand ( the what), I make sure that I represent the information in different ways utilizing web 2.0 technologies and other practices that bring the information to life for the students.
Finally, I allow students to express what they learn using their best learning modalities to address the how of learning. For example, if they like to draw, they can represent their understanding of a math concept in the drawing.
