About Kayla
I am distinguished in teaching/tutoring: * K-12 mathematics *Entry level college mathematics up to and including Calculus 1 and Calculus 2.
I am the CEO of patchmath.com and the primary tutor/teacher at the company.
I am also currently the Head Teaching Assistant at Harvard Extension School.
My teaching philosophy: To provide every student with an equitable opportunity to obtain a quality education that highlights the interconnectedness of the world and each student's link to it. This philosophy inspires me to always teach for, with, and about each student's learning style and diversities to inspire a connection to mathematics not often obtained in a traditional classroom.
My love for tutoring mathematics began in high school when I tutored elementary school mathematics at Nancy Elementary for four years. While obtaining my bachelor's degree at Berea College, I became a teaching assistant for Developmental Mathematics, Probability, and Calculus 2. Upon graduating from Berea College with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Secondary Education, I began my career at Lincoln County High School as a teacher. After two years of teaching in public schools, COVID-19 occurred and I took the opportunity to start teaching privately online and haven't left. I love the thrill of designing, implementing, and refining quality lessons tailored to a single student's unique learning needs and goals.
For Online Professors: I do independent contractual work for professors who teachers online and are looking to hire a TA. I was a TA for four sections of Introduction to Everyday Science at the American University of Afghanistan through a private contract with the professor. I grade, give feedback, construct course elements in CANVAS (assignments, modules, links, grade book weighting, etc., announcements), write exams, answer student emails, and much more.
In my free time, I rescue stray cats and manage a stray cat colony of about 30 cats. We have cleared out and converted our garage into a home for them where they can come and go. Working on insulating it and giving other housing options as current goals to help improve their quality of life! I also volunteer at the Humane Society in Somerset, KY. Outside of this, I love to paint with acrylics and go on hikes.

In our current educational culture, math classes are fast-paced, highly tested, becoming harder, and loaded with homework. Students are stressed, over-tested, and overworked. My lessons are designed to help students stuck in this toxic structure move beyond its limiting factors. Lessons are expertly designed to address the unique learning styles, needs, wants, and diversities of each student. The general goals of each lesson will be to: * Remediate student understanding of specific topics in their current, past, or upcoming math courses. In other words, patch the holes in the student math comprehension. * To help resolve any negative feelings the student may have with or about math. * Provide test-taking strategies and stress management tips based on student need of them. The specific goals of each lesson will be crafted together based on the student's needs.

Kayla is the BEST at what she does!
She has been tutoring my two daughters for a number of years. She patiently explains concepts in a way they find easy to understand. She uses a variety of methods to engage and ensure they have a clear understanding of each topic. She is always punctual and professional.
I couldn’t recommend her services more!Kayla is the most wonderful and amazingly extraordinarily competent tutor I have ever experienced. she tutors for both of my children, 12 years old and 18 years old, and she is a whiz at math. More importantly, she is someone who can make math fun. It seems like there are a lot of bad math teachers in the school systems, and that makes kids frustrated and feel like they “can’t do” or “don’t like” math. I asked her to tutor my kids over the summer even though they don’t have math classes and they were overjoyed to be able to work with her. She makes it unbelievably fun. And the proof is in the pudding. Both of them had these in math before Kayla started tutoring them. They finish the School year, both of them with A’s. Kayla is a genius!
