About Haider

I am a PhD candidate in Machine Learning. I want to teach to help inspire meaningful contributions in the field of Mathematics. To help my students fall in love with Mathematics and not be scared of it. I do so by trying to relate these concepts with real-world problems and the cool history of these ideas.

I like to make mathematics fun using animations and multimedia. I believe mathematics should be understood and not crammed, but I do like the odd tricks to help in quick maths. I love making these animations and helping students grasp the key concepts in Mathematics.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When I was studying for my bachelor's degree and had to do some social work for a community service course I was taking at the time. I thought what could be more meaningful to my community than knowledge so I started this event called academics week where older students would tutor younger students in new skills for free.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love teaching Mathematics and Machine Learning. I have had amazing experiences teaching Chinese as well.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My high school Mathematics teacher was very instrumental in the career I pursued in robotics and engineering so he was someone who inspired me a great deal.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The good qualities needed to be a good tutor are being patient and being an excellent communicator.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One valuable anecdote related to school is about the importance of perseverance and hard work. It is said that Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, failed more than 1,000 times before successfully inventing the light bulb. When asked about his failures, he famously replied, "I have not failed 1,000 times. I have successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb." This anecdote highlights the importance of perseverance, hard work, and a positive attitude in the face of failure.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I do feel that there need to be a better means of communicating the ideas especially in terms of pictures and animations.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My particular passion is Machine Learning and imparting skills hopefully that will outlast us.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions) ?

I love listening, I love engaging with new students and I love the process of not knowing something to knowing it.
