About Khelina
I am a mathematician at heart, with a career spanning nearly three decades of university teaching, alongside a PhD in machine learning and a research career applying advanced mathematics to real-world scientific problems. I began teaching mathematics at university level in Moscow and continued in Australia, where I taught undergraduate students at Swinburne University of Technology.
What draws me to teaching, beyond the mathematics itself, is watching a student move from confusion to genuine understanding — that moment when a concept finally clicks is, to me, one of the most rewarding parts of the job. I bring the same patience and rigor to tutoring that I've built over decades in the classroom, along with a genuine, lifelong enthusiasm for mathematics that I hope is infectious. My approach to tutoring is built around one core principle: skills are acquired through doing, not watching. At the start of each lesson, I explain the underlying theory clearly and work through one example to demonstrate the method. After that, the majority of lesson time is spent with the student actively solving problems themselves, while I guide, correct, and explain as needed. This is deliberate — genuine mathematical fluency comes from repeated, hands-on practice, not from passively observing someone else solve problems.
Lessons typically run for 90 minutes, which gives enough time to properly work through both theory and a meaningful amount of guided practice in a single session, rather than rushing through material.
I bring 28 years of university mathematics teaching experience, including four semesters teaching Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus to university students at Swinburne, where I received a 9.21/10 student satisfaction score. I hold a PhD and have taught the full undergraduate mathematics curriculum, from first-year foundations through to advanced topics.
My lessons are aimed at university students — whether you need help keeping up with coursework, are preparing for exams, or simply want to build genuine, lasting confidence in mathematics rather than short-term answers.
