About Cooper
I am a PhD student in English literature at The University of Tulsa. I've designed and taught several sections of English Composition and Introduction to Creative Writing at the college level, as well as several month-long courses in everything from science fiction to mythology for middle and high school students. My poems and essays have been published in magazines such as The Chattahoochee Review, The American Journal of Poetry, and New South Journal.

When I was young, I knew I wanted to make things. At the time, I just didn't know what I wanted to make. As an educator, I empower my students to make good things: essays, poems, stories, songs, anything as long as it is authentically the student's. First, I encourage students by producing materials that will both inspire and engage. Then, I explore the student's own unique voice, as well as their own important perspective. Once they believe in their voice and understand their perspective, we get down to the nitty-gritty: essay organization, passive voice, comma splices, works cited pages, line breaks in poetry, and the perfect sentence. While I instruct my students how to write both analytically and creatively, it is, perhaps, even more important that I teach them why to write: why writing is sacred and why it will always be so.
