About Jeffrey
I am an individual that absolutely loves teaching biology and environmental science courses. I am currently a PhD student at the University of Washington where I do both research and teach. My research is on Magellanic penguins and carnivores in South America. Who doesn't love penguins! In terms of teaching, I have been a teaching assistant at UW for over 15 quarters, which equates to more than 5 years of experience and more than 2000 students that I have worked with either one on one or in small groups. We receive teacher assessments at the end of each course so I have years of feedback from students that I have incorporated into my teaching strategy. The courses I have taught include: cell, molecular, and developmental biology, physiology (both plant and animal), ecology, evolution, genetics, and comparative vertebrate anatomy. In environmental science, I was the primary lecturer for a course on wildlife science and conservation in the modern world. I additionally have a graduate certificate in environmental management. I have a very broad background in the biological sciences that I love to pass on to my students. My undergraduate degree is in general biology from UW.

Teaching is my passion. I am looking to work with middle, high school, and undergraduate students. My typical approach is to hone in on the areas of difficulty the students are having with the subject material and then ask probing questions and have a conversation to determine where the difficulty lies. I then dive deeper into that specific material through more questions. I also present hypothetical questions leading students to apply their knowledge to new circumstances. This helps to determine the depth of understanding of the subject material. I also like to design activities individuals can work on to give them more practice on the subject. I prefer to adopt an active learning approach as opposed to just lecturing at students. All lectures I give to my undergraduate students are more like conversations than a straight lecture. It tends to be much more beneficial and research shows that it has a much better tract record for tangible results. I am happy to do either in person or online sessions. I have used zoom extensively for teaching in the past.
