I've worked in Primary schools all over Bristol with students from year 1-6, in both mainstream environments and SEN classes. I've also done group tutoring for Explore Learning as well as private tuition for KS1&2. I have also tutored a-level and degree level students in my specialist Humanities subjects.
I'm relaxed, calm and motivational, and in higher education I focus on making sure students structure essays effectively and make convincing and coherent arguments in their work.
I graduated with a distinction in my Masters degree in Ideology and Discourse Analysis in 2015. I also achieved a distinction in the Tefl course I completed in the same year, and I got a 2.1 in my Philosophy and Politics BA course. Before that, I got Bs and Cs in all of my a-levels and GCSEs.
I've worked in a range of schools and other educational environments over the past 18 months and I now know I'll do a lot of good getting into private tuition.
Hello I’m James, I’m a recently graduated MA student from the University of Essex and I am now working in various schools around Bristol, as well as doing some private tutoring. I worked for a year at Bishop Road Primary School, giving 1-2-1 guidance to a year 5 SEN student who suffers from a condition called Williams Syndrome.
I have been working in schools for about 18 months and I could not be happier with my new found work path. I love meeting and getting to know the children and I feel that I can offer understanding, empathy, motivation and encouragement to students, even those who struggle to concentrate or engage with work under normal classroom conditions as a result of their psychical differences. Since beginning to work in schools I have worked with a range of year groups in many different primary schools in Bristol as well as supervising examinations in higher levels of education. I feel confident in my ability to communicate effectively with young people with a wide range of ages and abilities, but I feel most confident working with small groups (or 1-2-1), making tutoring an ideal environment for me to provide the most help and assistance to students preparing for exams or other assessments.
In my down time my interests include reading journals and books on philosophy, education, social sciences, politics, language, and psychoanalysis, and I am interested in contemporary art, documentaries, independent cinema and photography. I have recently completed a TEFL qualification for which I received a Distinction. Since then I have volunteered with a group of adults whose first language is not English, giving me valuable experience communicating with adults as well as children. I would love to be part of a stimulating learning environment and would love to inspire students with the same desire for learning that I have felt at the best moments of my own education. Thank you for your consideration.
Private tutoring – October 2017 – ongoing.
I have now started taking on students for private tuition, my first students were from Bishop Road school, and I have since signed up to a number of tutoring platforms including Tutora to find students at both Primary level and at higher levels of education in the subjects I studied at university. I absolutely love it!
Explore Learning – June 2017 – September 2017
During the summer I got my first tutoring job with a private tutoring provider. Working there made me realise the great benefits of tutoring, particularly being able to see the effects of your assistance on the students. I did, however, soon realise that I could feel the benefits of tutoring more strongly working one-to-one with students, as the one-to-six ratio at EL felt ineffective to me, and I wanted to be able to work more personally with both the students and their parents.
Randstad Education – June 2017 – ongoing.
Earlier this year I joined Randstad education to broaden the range of teaching positions I have offered to me. This has given me experience in a wider range of schools in the Bristol area, particularly in SEN schools which is a work environment I find particularly satisfying.
Bishops Road Primary School - June 2016 – May 2017
In June I was sent to Bishops Road Primary School, the biggest primary School in Bristol, to work one-to-one with a boy in year 5. I loved the role and was lucky enough to apply for the job for the next academic year. I hugely enjoyed the daily challenges of working closely with an individual. While I have loved all of my time working in schools, this role was the most fulfilling job I have ever had.
Protocol Education – April 2016 – ongoing
Since April of this year, having moved to Bristol and found my feet, I have been working at various schools and colleges in the Bristol area. These assisting roles have been for one-to-one assistance as well as group work. I have worked in both mainstream and SEN schools and I have also done some work in nurseries around Bristol. During these few months I found that teaching was absolutely what I wanted to do.
