About Joe
I am a Reader in Physics at the University of Lancashire with over 20 years of experience teaching physics and mathematics. Throughout my career I have taught students from school level through to postgraduate researchers, helping them develop both strong subject knowledge and effective problem-solving skills.
Alongside teaching, I lead research in experimental physics, atomic-scale microscopy and manipulation, and computational wave and quantum physics. I have more than 50 published works in leading international journals, and I regularly supervise PhD students and research projects at the forefront of modern science. This means I use physics and mathematics every day, not just to teach, but to solve real research problems.
I began tutoring because I enjoy helping students reach their potential. Some students come to me because they are struggling with a particular topic, while others are aiming for the highest grades or preparing for competitive university courses. In both cases, my goal is the same: to build genuine understanding, confidence, and independent thinking.
Students and parents often appreciate that I can explain difficult concepts clearly and patiently, while also providing the depth and challenge needed by high-achieving students. Whether you are aiming to improve your grades, secure an A*, or prepare for a future in science, engineering, mathematics, or computing, I can provide expert guidance tailored to your goals.
Learn from an active research physicist with extensive university teaching experience and a passion for helping students succeed.

My approach to tutoring
Physics and mathematics make much more sense when you understand the ideas behind the formulae. My teaching focuses on building understanding, rather than relying on memorisation or learning procedures by rote.
I begin by identifying a student's current strengths, gaps in knowledge, and goals. Lessons are then tailored to the individual, whether that means reinforcing fundamental concepts, tackling challenging exam questions, or exploring topics beyond the school syllabus. I encourage students to explain their thinking, develop problem-solving strategies, and build the confidence to approach unfamiliar questions independently.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged for intensive revision or examination preparation.
I am a Reader in Physics at the University of Lancashire with more than 20 years of experience teaching physics and mathematics. Alongside teaching, I lead internationally recognised research in condensed matter and computational physics and artificial intelligence, publishing in leading scientific journals and supervising researchers at postgraduate level. Remaining active at the forefront of physics research allows me to bring real scientific thinking into my teaching and helps students see how the concepts they learn at school connect to modern science and technology.
Lessons are suitable for:
• GCSE Physics and Maths students
• A Level Physics and Maths students
• Students aiming to improve grades and confidence
• High-achieving students targeting grades 8/9 and A/A*
• Students preparing for university study in physics, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and other STEM subjects
Whether you are trying to overcome a particular difficulty or striving to achieve the highest grades, my aim is to help you develop a deeper understanding of the subject and reach your full potential.
Learn from an active research physicist who combines university-level expertise with clear, student-focused teaching.
