About Ruth
I am a first-year cognitive science major on the premed track at Occidental College, as an 1887 Scholar. I'm originally from the DC metropolitan area. I am an AP Scholar with Distinction. I worked as a mentor for the Academic Mentoring Program for George Mason's Early Identification Program from 2022-24, advising students on personal and academic matters. I also worked as a mentor for the Institute for Excellence, a 6-week program hosted by George Mason University that gave high school students the opportunity to take college classes over the summer. Over my time working with the Early Identification Program, I have gained an abundance of experience in tutoring students in topics I'm both familiar and unfamiliar with. I also have 2 little brothers, which means I have always taken on an advisory role. I am very passionate about educating myself and others!

My lessons are directed towards high school students, especially high school students taking Advanced Placement courses. My teaching method combines conceptual understanding with execution. I review the concepts and ensure the student is well-versed in the topic. I like to have the student "teach" the topic to me as if I know nothing about it. I then place an emphasis on practice problems and making sure the student knows all the different ways the same question can be asked. For example, if I were tutoring a student on derivatives, I'd spend the first half of the session explaining how derivatives work conceptually and then showing them the proofs for the rules. I'd then ask them how to use derivatives in a real-life context, such as the amount of water in a tub versus the rate at which water was dripping into the tub. I'd then provide a wide variety of practice problems. I'd intentionally run through at least one of the practice problems wrong, giving the student the opportunity to catch my mistake and correct me. What sets me apart is that I prepare the student to use the knowledge in both a real-world setting, but also in an exam setting as well.
