About Carlyss

To bring out the best in my students, whether they're experienced, new to it all, young or mature, means that each session is different. Coming from shy roots, my techniques are varied but nurturing; building my student’s confidence as we go and gaining trust so we can get you working outside your comfort zone. My experience as a professional actor ranges from TV, stage, film, voice-over, commercials and radio work in venues such as The National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, The Old Vic and Donmar Warehouse and on channels such as Amazon, BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and Acorn TV. I have been teaching and coaching for over 17 years. As well as running a theatre school for 3-18s for over 10 years, I have worked as a teacher, coach and mentor with professional actors, young people, youth theatres, amateur dramatic societies, school groups, students in training and recent graduates.

About the lesson

Each session will be tailored to whatever you would like to focus on. A specific text or audition, a self-tape, drama school entry prep, monologue work, poetry, a presentation at work - you name it! Sessions can be either face-to-face in Leyton, at your home (location permitting) or over webcam. Each lesson may include voice and breath work, articulation, text analysis, memorisation techniques, presentation skills, RP & American accent coaching fir actors (though am not a qualified accent coach) or improvisation, amongst other things. I have a keen interest in classical text and Shakespeare, as well as other acting practitioners such as Stanislavski and Meisner and I hold an enhanced DBS check. Typically an acting session will include a focus check - what you want to work on, a warm-up to get in the zone, a deep dive into text/analysis/the piece, exercises or techniques to explore, a review of the piece to see what's shifted, time for reflection. Please do get in touch if you have any questions and I look forward to helping you on your acting journey.

Perfect! From the first lesson, Carlyss has welcomed me with joy and kindness, which have sustained throughout the entire training process. She guided me in understanding my monologues so they were truthful, alive and spontaneous. To be able to learn from someone with so much experience (who is also a drama school panelist) is incredibly valuable, even more so when that person is also kind, supportive, and an excellent teacher. That’s why I truly enjoyed learning from Carlyss!

Perfect! Carlyss really took the time to understand my needs and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the most supportive way.

I got the call back for the show I auditioned for and was then cast in the ensemble. I used everything I learnt from Carlyss and feel more confident as a result.

I highly recommend Carlyss and now, I can’t wait for opening night!

Carlyss has helped me with numerous audition scenes and also often the American accent that they require. She is incredibly thorough and professional. Her ability to help me dissect the script and American accent has been invaluable. I always feel completely equipped for each audition after our sessions. And for an added bonus, she is a lovely person. Highly recommend.

Carlyss helped with my speeches for drama school and gave me some key audition technique, they also supported in some direction for a play I was in at Big Spirit Youth Theatre. She made me feel more confident in my acting ability and pushed me to build my strength in the arts. Shakespeare to me was gibberish at first but Carlyss helped us all understand the fun you can have around Shakespeare, and how you can easily translate it to modern text.
