My name is Tom Hastings, I'm a qualified English tutor with years of experience helping students to realise their potential. Having studied English Literature to MA level (UCL BA, 1st Class Hons.; Sussex MA, Distinction), I am in the process of completing my PhD Art History at Leeds University, where I teach a 1st-year seminar course.
Each tutoring relationship is different. Typically, I will invite parents to a consultation phone call in order to discuss goals and problem areas that need to be addressed; these might range from A-Level exam preparation to improving writing skills. Tutorials are geared to the needs of the individual pupil, and involve a range of source materials. In all cases, my aim is to instil a passion for reading and independent thinking.
I am a focused, interested and patient person who wants to see those around me do well. Teaching a range of abilities from KS2 through to undergraduate level has been an incredibly enriching experience; the process of finding a language to explain new concepts and themes has impacted positively on my own academic research, leading me to question how I communicate my arguments. I especially enjoy working with pupils who struggle with reading and writing skills. Often difficulties arise from a loss of confidence around the learning environment; the hierarchy of the classroom can present a real challenge to students who don't feel heard. Through one-to-one tutoring I endeavour to work through such difficulties, raising the student's self-confidence through a tailored, meaningful approach.
I have recently updated my enhanced DBS check and have a flexible schedule.
