About Caroline

I started studying Computer Science at Unisa. A couple of years later, though, I was accepted into a prestigious training program. I knew instantly that I'd found my vocation.

Over the next three decade, and three continents, I pursued all avenues of this fascinating field. From Cobol on mainframes, to RPG on IBM midranges, to running a consultancy in California creating a myriad of sites and systems during the 2000 startup boom.

More recently, I've branched into DevOps, AWS and other new technologies.

You can learn pretty much anything for free, online. Last month, I used YouTube to diagnose and fix my motorbike's wiring harness. How amazing is that? Why then does anyone need a tutor?

I've spent my life seeking knowledge, in a vast array of subjects, and I've learned a lot about learning.

Learning, quite literally, hurts. When you take on a new subject, new neural pathways are created physically in your brain and it is painful. This is why repetition works; on the third or fourth time, the pathway is in place and the effort is gone. Most people naturally avoid this pain and a tutor can help you push through the discomfort.

Then there's the confusion. Learning a complex and extensive subject like computers is a lot like trying to put together a massive jigsaw puzzle of clouds. Most courses, in my experience, fail to adequately highlight the nuanced differences between similar concepts, but an experienced tutor can help you sort and identify the puzzle pieces more effectively, helping you to put it all together, more easily and faster.

One of the least acknowledged aspects of learning is the effect it has on self-esteem and emotions. Learning is humbling and not ego-friendly. The biggest barrier to knowing is thinking you already know. I don't know who said that but it's absolutely true. You can't add to a full cup, so approaching a new subject with a humble attitude goes a long way.

Experience, though, is gained not only by doing but by making mistakes, which is why most companies don't hire people without it. Many mistakes are minor but others can be devastating and crushing to your self-confidence. Most happen because the theory of any subject only ever covers so much and doesn't match up to real life or the practical realities of the work. Being a bit of a risk taker, my mistakes have been my best teachers. You can't avoid them completely, and shouldn't be afraid to take some risks, but an experienced tutor with real-life experience can steer your clear of the major pitfalls.

Previous students have described my approach as "spoon feeding". I like to think of it as a silver spoon. You may not have been born with one in your mouth but I can certainly give you the privileges and advantages that come with such a spoon. I don't wait for you to stumble around in the dark. I don't wait for you to ask the right questions. I take on some of the responsibility for your learning so you can just focus on taking the information in, as quickly and as painlessly as possible.
