About Ramez

Having achieved Grade 9s at GCSE (i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics), 3A*s at A-level (Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics), and as a current second year Student Doctor, I know exactly what it takes to unlock your full potential in excelling in examinations.

Tutoring is an aspect in life which has always appealed to me- the ability to share my knowledge and help mentor students with regards to their academics has always proved to be very satisfying for me. One aspect of tutoring which has always been very valuable to me is seeing the sheer excitement of students once they have achieved the grades they were looking for- whether it be their GCSE or A-level grades or even the exams they sit within class during term time. All of this is a reflection of all the hard work they have put into the tutoring sessions, as well as outside of these sessions. Therefore, I hope to be able to continue tutoring as it has proven to be beneficial.

As for my 6 years of experience in tutoring, coaching, and guiding students and colleagues from a wider variety of backgrounds and abilities, I have understood the core principle that underlies effective tutoring- the fact that different students have different approaches to learning. Essentially, there is no 'one size fits all' approach. Over the years, during school and now in medical school, I have been adapting my teaching style according to the preference of my students/colleagues. This has been seen especially in the past 2 years where I have had to adapt my tutoring style from being tailored towards face-to-face sessions, now to effective online sessions. Therefore, I have developed the ability of ensuring that my students are just as engaged during our online sessions as they would be during our face-to-face sessions. Engagement is really important because it would encourage you to look forward to our tuition sessions which consequently, would give you further motivation to work more consistently throughout the year. As consistency is a key principle in scoring the higher grades, it can be seen that it would help you develop academically. Overall, my goal as a Tutor is to help bridge the gap between your current grade and an A*/A.

Now, an insight into my Tutoring style:

Subjects may require different learning approaches. Throughout my own education, this has taught me that according to the subject, I may need to adapt my learning style so that it is more tailored towards those specific exams. Looking back in hindsight, I can say that my flexible learning styles has helped me to perform at my optimum level across the exams I had during school and now in medical school. Therefore, the first thing I will check as a Tutor is to see how you are learning your subject. For example, when it comes to Chemistry, there are many different reactions and equations which you would need to know as part of the curriculum. Now, how are you learning these reactions/equations- are you solely reading and memorising these equations or, are you trying to gain a clear understanding of how the different functional groups work together? Are you then able to link this to other Chemistry topics? Are you then able to apply this knowledge to exam questions? As a result, by taking these questions into consideration, I will help guide you into gaining a clear understanding of the topic, and not to solely rely on rote learning content (as this may not work for the exam). Overtime, this can help you score progressively higher in your exams.

Right, so now we would have become aware of the strengths and weaknesses in your approach to learning. The next step would be to know exactly what your exam board requires from you. I will guide you on the effective ways (ways that I used in school and still currently use) which would help you follow everything on your syllabus throughout the year. This way, no learning points would be missed out and so it would ensure that you would have covered everything your curriculum requires. This would help reduce any anxiety and stress levels because it would allow you to be fully aware of all the possible topics which could appear in your GCSE and/or A-level examinations. Now, from here the next step would be to work towards learning all these topics and so become ready for the exams.

In order to work towards the exams, we need to firstly have a plan- a plan which would allow us to cover all topics, review all topics, and complete exam questions in advance of the exams. As well as us going through topics together during our sessions, I will guide you on what you can do outside of the tuition sessions to ensure you can achieve optimal academic development. One, of many, examples of how I will work with you is by giving homework- this would ensure that the topics you are learning during tuition are revisited and retained. Therefore, the homework will be based on content which we would have covered in the session but also, content which we would have covered in the past. This way, you would be retaining the information you are learning. Consequently, this would give us more time to go through new topics and to also attempt new exam questions.

Ultimately, these techniques are ones which I have learnt to adopt through my evidence-based approach to learning- evidence coming from my own academic experience as well as the experience from my students and colleagues. These learning approaches have played huge roles in helping me attain the grades I have over the years, and very importantly, it has also helped my students/colleagues attain fantastic grades. I hope to share this knowledge with you too.

Please feel free to ask any questions and I am more than happy to help!
