I begin with a close-reading of the text, followed by a discussion. While a significant portion of the class is conversational, I design targeted writing assignments which help students consolidate their understanding of the material and develop their skills in expressing themselves. I guide them through their thought process, sentence structure, grammar, and references.
This approach is particularly useful for high school students and undergraduate English majors who are assessed on their familiarity with the texts and their ability to communicate their ideas.
The ultimate goal is to make students independent readers and confident writers.
