About Thomas
- What kind of experience do you have?
As a pedagogue, I have been teaching privately since I was a student at Birmingham Conservatoire. I am currently a cello tutor for 'Services for Education - Music Service' in Birmingham, with experience teaching students ranging from Juniors to Sixth Form. I have taken orchestral sectional rehearsals for orchestras based in Birmingham and in June 2016, enjoyed coaching chamber groups as a guest tutor at the Sheffield Academy of Music.
My performing career began as a Postgraduate student. Having already performed at the Conservatoire concert series' on numerous occasions, I have performed recitals in venues across the country and have appeared as soloist with orchestras based in Birmingham, Redditch, South Wales, Swindon and Wolverhampton.
A keen chamber musician, I have performed chamber works at the Wigmore Hall, the BBC Proms and live on BBC Radio 3 as part of the 2016 'Sounds of Shakespeare' Festival. I have recently performed with renowned chamber musicians violinists Suzanne Stanzeleit and Simon Smith, baritone Roderick Williams, pianist Iain Burnside and violist Robin Ireland.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire between the years 2008-2015 with tutors Alexander Baillie, John Todd and Philip Higham. Previously I had lessons with John Senter (former Principal Cellist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales).

Friendly, experienced and passionate cello teacher offering lessons in the West Midlands area. As well teaching privately, I have previously taught for the Birmingham Music Service as well as at the Priory School in Birmingham and Wolverhampton Grammar School.
I am an active performer and have performed around the country as part of an orchestra, piano ensemble, string quartet and as a soloist.
Lessons take place in Edgbaston, Birmingham on Tuesday evenings and Thursdays. Currently have spaces for all ages and all standards.
Lessons are 30 minutes for beginners to early intermediate and 60 minutes for intermediate to advanced students.
Your first lesson will be to determine how you would like to benefit from the sessions. You may decide to work through music grades or just simply learn for fun!
In your lesson, a section, (usually at the beginning), will be devoted to scales, arpeggios and studies, which is an important and necessary part of learning an instrument. A large chunk of the lesson will be devoted to pieces, as well as sight reading, aural and music theory.
Able to provide instruments for hire at a small extra cost.
