I believe in a hands-on, student-centric approach. Teaching middle schoolers and high schoolers requires a blend of patience and dynamism, given the varied pace at which each student learns. My teaching is rooted in the principle of 'learning by doing'. Instead of just imparting theoretical knowledge, I emphasize on practicing math together, actively involving students in problem-solving sessions. By asking probing questions and letting students think aloud, I ensure they not only find the right answer but also understand the underlying concepts.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Review of Previous Lesson: I start by revisiting the previous lesson’s content to reinforce retention and understanding.
Introduction to New Topic: Briefly introduce and explain the new topic, drawing connections to real-life scenarios or previous lessons if possible.
Practice Together: Dive into problem-solving. I usually present a problem, solve it while explaining my steps, and then let students attempt similar problems.
Interactive Discussion: After practicing, we discuss the solutions. This helps in clearing any lingering doubts.
Weekly Quizzes: To keep track of the students' progress, I will take weekly quizzes. This isn’t just to grade them, but to identify areas they might be struggling with.
Feedback & Homework: I provide feedback on the day's work and assign homework to solidify their understanding.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
Having previously taught at Mathnasium, I bring a structured and methodical approach to tutoring. My experience there equipped me with unique techniques to simplify complex problems and present them in a more digestible manner to young students. Moreover, my patience, adaptability, and genuine passion for mathematics make me more than just a tutor; I am a mentor guiding students to not just learn, but love the subject.
Who the Lessons Are For:
My lessons are primarily designed for middle schoolers and high schoolers. However, I tailor my teaching techniques based on the individual needs of each student. Whether they're aiming for advanced placement or need extra assistance in understanding foundational concepts, my lessons are adaptable to cater to diverse learning needs.
