About Matthew

As a senior studying at the University of British Columbia, majoring in Political Science, I bring both academic knowledge and real-world tutoring experience to my sessions. I've worked with middle and high school students, helping them develop confidence in reading, writing, and literary analysis. My passion lies in both creative and academic writing, and I strive to make every lesson engaging, student-centered, and tailored towards individual capabilities and learning styles. I approach each session with patience and a genuine enthusiasm for helping people grow as thinkers and communicators. My goal is not only to support academic success but maybe even help foster lifelong skills and appreciation for literature and self-expression.

The manner in which I structure my lesson plans (in this context, with students in the Grade 9 - 12 range, as it is the demographic I am experienced in tutoring) typically proceeds as follows:

Sample Lesson on the Subject of Modern Literature and Thesis Preparation

1. Learning Objectives:
By the end of each lesson, students will be able to identify a central theme in a modern literary work (e.g., The Outsiders, Lord of the Flies), construct a thesis statement in relation to that theme, and organize supporting evidence into an outline.

2. Methodology & Techniques
When tutoring a subject like English Literature, encouraging students to connect their own personal experiences to the text can help them better understand the material and contextualize it in a more familiar manner.
Other methods I generally apply include the Socratic Method of posing open-ended questions and discussion to foster critical thinking, breaking down complex writing tasks into simple, manageable, and formulaic steps, and providing real-time feedback during said discussions and activities.

A typical Lesson Plan:
Warm-Up with a prompt, "What themes stand out to you in the book so far? Why?" Typically answered in the format of quick writing and/or partner discussion if multiple students exist.
When a student(s) struggles to grasp the presence of certain themes in literature, I like to point to important scenes and ask them what they think it means to help nudge them in the right direction, for example.
I would follow up with a Mini-Lecture and, in the context of a lesson plan on Thesis preparation, model an example. This would be immediately followed by guided practice. If there are multiple pupils, the students would draft their own thesis statements in pairs and engage in group feedback, discussing what works and what needs clarity. Finally, I typically would end the session with independent practice. In this context, I would ask them to begin outlining their essay structure, specifically their introduction with a thesis statement.

I like to emphasize developing literary interpretation skills and helping students grow their voice and provide clear and supportive feedback loops to build confidence.

My lesson plans and methodology are typically for high school students, and are especially fine-tuned towards students preparing for AP English or other social sciences who seek to learn to write at the college level. I am experienced with tutoring students who were in need of developing analytical reading, literary response, and academic writing skills, as it can be a unique challenge for certain students, given that everyone is different!
