About Matthew
After graduating with a degree in English Literature from the University of Chicago in 2008, I spent the next fifteen (15) years living and working in Seoul, South Korea, teaching in some of the most prestigious private academies in the city. There, I developed thousands of pages of material teaching everything from basic reading skills (for lower-level students) to strategic guides for AP English Literature and Language exams, in which my students NEVER received scores lower than the maximum 5.
I want to take this experience and help you maximize your skills and abilities in writing, reading, and expression, and enjoy best the process of developing lesson plans that cater to students' specific needs.

I like to work from first principles, so my approach to literary analysis and essay writing instruction is heavily based on a series of simple precepts: All writing is process; All writing is choice; All writing is argument.
From there, I have a program of texts, depending on the type of instruction required (literary analysis generally, poetry close-reading, novel book reports and argumentative analyses, rhetorical analysis, etc.). Through these, I guide students through simple steps first through how to approach text, then how to articulate a procedural / chronological reading of that text, and finally how to translate that into a standardized essay structure.
With other types of class (more general academic essays, for instance), the instruction is specific to the student and his/her/their needs and issues (for instance, I will often introduce a vocabulary program to aid students' approach to primary source documents).
For college consulting, I begin with a comprehensive interview process, delving into students' experiences and opinions to find good foundations for Common Application essays and personal statements. Thereafter, I work closely with students, guiding them through the draft process and then through the meticulous process of honing the essay to its essence, ensuring that the text delivers the maximum amount of meaning in the most concise and effective way possible.
