I adapt my lessons to meet my students needs; not everybody wants to learn the same way. That said, I place a definite focus on ear training and pattern-based learning. I do this because if you have a really well-honed ear, you will be able to teach yourself. That is my goal: to teach you how to be self-sufficient as a musician so that you won't need a teacher in the future.
I am a professional guitarist with over fifteen years of live experience and twenty years of teaching experience. I have played gigs all over the world and I am fluent in all popular styles of guitar. In 2019, my band won Best Alt. Country Album and Best Alt. Country Single at the Independent Music Awards in New York. I live and breathe guitar.
Not only can I teach you how to play, I can teach you how to train your "ear" so that you can teach yourself. First lesson free with no obligation to continue. Take that first step and become the awesome guitarist you've always wanted to be.
I am a self-taught musician. I have no relevant academic qualifications, but I have twenty years of professional experience as a teacher and session musician.
Freelance teacher: 2000-present
Peripatetic teacher: 2004-2020
I have taught full-time through numerous agencies including SCMPS, ACEG, Music Station and MTech.
Live music performance/session musician: 2002-present
In 2002, I took on my first "job" as a musician when I played guitar for the pit band of a touring production of "The Beggar's Opera". We played a handful of shows in New York and the tri-state area. This was my first taste of touring and I loved it. I decided right then that I was going to be a professional musician.
Since then, I have collaborated with many bands, including:
I started working with Chris Letcher in 2007 when he was touring his first solo album "Frieze". We toured across Europe and South Africa and had several live TV appearances in the UK, Germany and Serbia. The "Frieze" album was included in the SA Sunday Times' Album Of The Decade list. We would go on to record a second album, "Spectroscope", which won the SA Sunday Times' Album Of The Year in 2011. Letcher now focuses on scoring music for film and TV. I recorded a guitar session for his score of Martina Cole's "The Runaway" on ITV.
Rich Webb Band
I started working with the Rich Webb Band in about 2008. The band have toured extensively across Germany with occasional shows in other European cities. Together, we wrote and recorded two albums, an EP and multiple singles. Our latest album, 2019's "Le Rayon Vert", won Best Alt. Country album at the 2019 Independent Music Awards in New York and the single "Let It Rain" won best Alt. Country single at the same event.
This is my function band. We started as "The Vibes" in 2005 but have since rebranded. I have played literally thousands of shows with this band in multiple countries. We have played for some great clients, including The British Army, The Royal Navy, Celebrity Cruises, IKEA, DFDS Seaways, Toyota, Brittany Ferries and many, many others.
I worked with Phil in a corporate environment and from the word go, I couldn’t have asked for a more professional musician. His musicianship is second to none and I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with him.
Phil is a natural musician and an empathetic and caring teacher. His knowledge and skills on guitar will suit the beginner through to an accomplished player looking to move to the next level. I cannot recommend him more highly as a guitar teacher, on both a technical and personal level.
Phil is an all round professional, great approach to music in general and has a great way of explaining things and making them clear to understand. I’d really recommend him highly .
I have rehearsed and performed along side Phil on several occasions and his patience, understanding and technique with his guitar never ceases to to impress me. His knowledge of theory is evident in his slick playing skills. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Phil.

Phil is an outstanding teacher who is knowledgeable and patient. He creates a safe environment where you can ask any question, no matter how silly it may seem, and he has a way of understanding your point of view and explaining the information in a way in which you can understand. I have learnt so much from Phil in the few years that I have known him and always enjoy my time with him.
Phil is one of the most experienced musicians I know, and has a genuine passion for both theory and practical music knowledge! From tech to shred, Phil's your man.
