About Vikas
On the Guitar, my forte is the pick-based technique of playing and I have a unique take on it, as I have worked on the art and mechanics of picking for many years to develop my own style. If picking is your preferred technique too, then you are right up my alley. I am not a finger-picker in the classical guitar vein (though I employ it on the Ukulele due to the softer nylon strings) and if that happens to be your calling then I will not be the right fit for you.
Playing western music on the guitar usually involves being able to execute 3 core aspects (apart from rhythm which is overarching) : 1) Melody (scales form a part of it), 2) Chords and 3) Arpeggios. The challenge involves understanding and executing these individually as well as their interplay. One who wishes to express their own music must have a very good command over these, and one who does so is often referred by me as a "total guitar player" rather than a "rhythm player" or "lead player".
Secondly, to understand any type of music in the form of a language, requires the player to train their ears to hear, interpret and speak/sing the music at whatever level they can. For one, it increases their appreciation/understanding of music and their instrument; two, it lets them respond to other musicians better; three, it opens up a creative spring within themselves that fuels their own music creation.
They say string instruments are at the top of the challenge-pyramid, and the guitar offers numerous challenges due to its complex design and its unmatched versatility (owing to the numerous playing techniques pioneered by various players and the plethora of musical applications). The reason why a lot of people are put off by the guitar beyond the basic level stuff is due in large part to the technique involved which is quite steep and unforgiving, beyond that stage. I've been at it for 25+ years and the one thing I can say that has been constant amidst all the challenges, failures and small victories is the thrill of discovering oneself and one's abilities along the way.
So my technique is pick-based and teaching approach is towards being a "total guitar player" with at least a moderately trained ear. If that catches your fancy, and you have the stomach for the grind, do enquire.

- My focus is on encouraging players to become "total guitar players" as mentioned in the "About Vikas" section, by being an enabler and a guide (path illuminator)
- I also want to help guitar players hear and understand music better via ear-training methods that use internalization, recognition and audiation
- My classes are for anyone from the age of six and above who’s sure of putting in the grind or at least wanting to give it a shot. Not really for the casual hobbyist as there are better guides/teachers out there for that
- Classes are accompanied with weekly assignments shared via email that contain class whiteboard images, my observations, exercises in notation/TAB, audio files and GuitarPro files as necessary
Note:
- I take Ukulele classes also and can help young people use it either as a stepping stone to the guitar or as a separate instrument in itself
- On the Ukulele though I use finger picking as well as the pick
