About Mark
As a public school student, I personally struggled to learn mathematics, earning mainly B's. At the time, I did not understand HOW or WHY the math lessons would be useful in real life. After graduating from high school, I served a four-year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps infantry and was lucky enough to survive that experience and expand my motivation to achieve success in the civilian world. I used the G.I. Bill and worked part-time jobs so that I could attend Purdue University, where I had to earn a minor in Mathematics before being admitted to their School of Engineering. I achieved a 3.74 GPA at the time I earned my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Since then, I have worked 20 years as an Engineer, working with people from all over the world designing electronics for Automotive products. When teaching math, I bring my practical and professional experience to help the student understand WHY the math skills are needed and HOW they can use them in their own lives. I believe that this basic motivation is necessary for the student to truly grasp new math skills and to retain the lessons for their use in the future.

I seek to understand the student's current understanding and challenges in their regular (K-12) curriculum, and based on that assessment I will cater the lessons to fill in the gaps and advance their understanding beyond their grade level.
I incorporate real-world problems where a particular math skill will be useful to them in their life, to help deepen their understanding and motivate them to learn and retain the knowledge.
I emphasize general problem-solving approaches and techniques that will aid them as they learn new math disciplines in the future.
I am a father to two children in public schools and am well-practiced in helping them to achieve math understanding far beyond what is provided by their lackluster teachers.
