About James

- My CV I was a pupil at Manchester Grammar School, attaining straight As at GCSE and A level (in the days before A*s) and two 1s at S level in Physics and Chemistry (there’s a Wikipedia page for scholarship_level if you want to find out what those were). I read Natural Sciences at St John’s College Cambridge, a broad course including Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Material Science. Heading to the City for some years I trained and practised at a Big Four Firm doing the exams of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, and the Institute of Tax, achieving first time passes (and missing a Merit by a mere 0.25%, but please don’t ask me about that!) The Institutes' exams are likened to doing six A levels every three months. I therefore find exam technique and exams a joy. Provided you practise, practise, practise you can’t go wrong. These days I mix tutoring my old school passions with some consultancy. - Why am I here? I love the buzz I get from teaching; there's nothing like it. I love sharing my enthusiasm for my subjects with others and I’m here both to enthuse and to help students to pass exams better than they ever thought possible. I volunteer as a tutor under the Mayor of London's scheme for underprivileged children - Let me tell you a secret There's nothing inherently difficult about school work, millions of students have done it before; the difficulty is in understanding it in the first place. It's my job as a tutor to make sure it's been properly understood and I am well-regarded for being able to achieve this. - Am I sure? Yes. That's why I offer a free lesson. It's not a 'meet the parents and chat over coffee' hour. It's an hour of getting to know the student and passing on my skills. You'll be back!

**Please note, I have limited availability however I am here as some free time has opened up unexpectedly. I am also new here so am offering two hours free tuition for my first three Maths students. This is two hours of lessons; not two hours of getting to know you. What have you got to lose?!** I am a firm believer that if you explain something to somebody they will forget it within minutes; whereas if you guide them along a path and tease it out of them then they will remember it for life (or at least until the exam). It's painful for a few minutes, but then the lightbulb comes on and never goes out. Little is more dispiriting than sitting with a tutor who says 'it's obvious'. I remember that only too well from my Cambridge days; I am not Einstein and recognise that most straight A* students aren't either. It's not always obvious; particularly if it's not been explained in a way the student understands. My biggest thrill in life is to take a student who says 'I don't get it' to a bright student who says 'Aha! How could I not have got it?' I have decades of experience with working with students of all ages up to Cambridge Undergraduate students from 7 years old. (And I have taught tax and accountancy to graduates too.) I am guided by what my students need help with. I can help with and supplement what they learn in class; I can revise old work, I can take them to new places. Or we can canter through an entire syllabus to look for the weak spots. I relish working closely with parents if they wish to manage the process, but equally am happy to take full charge.
