I prefer 1hour teaching rule, as I believe any individual's mind works most efficiently during the first hour of the learning process. During the 1hour I would teach the student the concept and make them well verse the topic with help of examples.
For example: learning the formula for total area of a cylinder. One can either memorize the formula or understand the underlying concept and remember the formula forever.
Cylinder consists of two circles one at top and other at bottom.
Therefore area of two circles 2pir^2
If we remove the top and bottom and cut the cylinder vertically straight, we will have a rectangle with length as height of cylinder and breadth as circumference of the circle. Area = 2pirh
Therefore total surface area = 2pir^2 + 2pirh = 2pir(r+h)
Learning can be made simple and effective if we go by logic and real time examples.
