I have experience teaching in a classroom setting and one on one. My approach is typically to explain a concept, demonstrate examples, then complete examples together, before asking the student to complete questions alone. I often alternative between the last two stages until the student has a strong understanding of the concept. I am also aware that foundational concepts often require reteaching before moving onto more complex concepts.
