About Rubina
I am a scientist at The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited with expertise in the field of molecular biology, plant genetics, cell wall biology, and bioinformatics. My research work has been predominantly centered around investigating the biological mechanisms regulating plant adaptation during abiotic stress and plant senescence. Recently, I am working on two research goals: (1) understanding the protective role of flavonoid pigments in early land colonization of liverworts and, (2) molecular and genetic components regulating flower development and dwarfism.
I enjoy teaching and my teaching philosophy is mainly based on research-led teaching process that integrates research with teaching and learning. This process allows effective engagement of students in their learning processes. This teaching method benefits students in multiple ways as it provides a deeper understanding of the subject, develops intellectual capabilities, and enables them to learn independently and collaboratively. I believe that a good teaching strategy is a composite of both the teaching and inclusion of lessons of research. Students can learn effectively when they actively immerse themselves in discussions and develop good research skills and techniques by conducting it rather than being passive recipients of material.

As a teacher, my primary role is to enable students to identify and understand the basic problems in various disciplines of plant biology. I believe that learning is an iterative and interactive process achieved by the integration of many teaching strategies such as offering well-structured courses, developing research and practice-based skills, empowering students to make inspiring courses, and teaching real world examples. In teaching, I emphasize that students become creative thinkers, learn industry-relevant skills and develop effective communications skills. I believe that these goals can be achieved by igniting curiosity and excitement among students.
